Travel is needed to revive the global economy

Travel should be at the centre of the revival of the global economy rather than be targeted by environmental protesters, the UN World Tourism Organisation said this week. 

The UNWTO wrote a letter to G20 tourism ministers as demonstrators descended on London, where many of them protested against the industry’s impact on global warming. 

But UNWTO assistant secretary-general Geoffrey Lipman said all G20 countries should be encouraging travel in order to stimulate trade. 

Tourism provided 6% of jobs in the G20 countries and helped sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing, which often depended on a demand for travel.
